The first event organised this year by the SUT’s Brazil Branch was the International Wave Energy Seminar. The seminar took place at COPPE/Federal University of Rio de Janeiro on February 13, with four presentations given. These included: ‘Wave Energy in Brazil’ by Professor Segen Estefen – COPPE/UFRJ; ‘The Role of Alternative Energy Sources in Brazil’ by Professor Maurício Tolmasquim – Empresa de Pesquisa Energética; ‘Renewable Energy in the UK’ by Professor Ian Bryden – University of Edinburgh; and ‘Wavegen: Recent Exeriences and Technological Developments’ by Mr David Langston –Wavegen.

Eletrobrás’ president and the president of the Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (Energy Research Company), the main public energy entities in the country under the Mines and Energy Ministry, spoke during the opening of the event. Press coverage included a considerable part of the main national TV news programme in Brazil, the Jornal Nacional, not to mention the additional coverage by other TV stations and printed publications. More than 250 professionals from the energy sector attended the seminar.
