Shtokmanskoye is the fourth largest gas field ever discovered. It is 550 km from shore in the Barents Sea and presents many challenges to engineers. This introduction gives some thoughts on the size and scale of the problems.

Challenges with Control Systems for Ultra-Long Step-Out Projects

Vidar Sten Halvorsen, FMC Technologies; and Neville Hazell, Alcatel Submarine Networks

Extension of traditional solutions:

  • Hydraulic distribution

  • Hydraulic fluids

  • Electric power distribution
